Challenge

Designing a wayfinding system for a large hospital is one of the most complex challenges in environmental design; an anxious patient—often dealing with a health issue—must be able to quickly locate the correct department, floor, and room. Building A of the East Tallinn Central Hospital requires a clear, cohesive wayfinding system that functions effectively within a complex, multi-story hospital building and remains legible even to people with impaired vision.

Solution

A wayfinding system was created that uses clear color-coding to distinguish between building sections (labeled A, B, and C) alongside high-contrast floor numbers. The system employs the Exo 2 typeface, which remains highly legible even from a distance or when viewed at an angle. The signage follows a hierarchical structure: large directional signs, smaller department signs, and minimalist room numbers.
